Business impact levels are used to classify and label records according to the sensitivity of the information in the records and the impact the release of information contained in the records might have on individuals or organisations. The higher the impact level the greater the security requirements associated with the records. More information can be found in the Business Impact Level Tables issued by the Cabinet Office. Note that in 2014, a new classification system, the Government Security Classifications Policy, will replace the Government Protective Marking Scheme.
