Add a service incident type
A service incident marks a point in time and space when your authority provided a service for someone, such as dumped waste, library rentals and pest control complaints. These are grouped into types. There's a few service incident types loaded into the system but feel free to add missing items using the instructions below.
- Visit the Service Incidents uploader and sign in to your account.
- Scroll down and click the 'Add service incident type' button.
- Give the type a name in the 'type label' field, e.g. library rental, theft.
- Use the 'Related type' drop-down to relate the incident to a local government service. If you decide to create a metric type from your service incidents, the metric type will also be related to the service you choose.
- Add the service incident type to a group by selecting an existing group or typing to add a new one. For example, if you're adding the service incident type 'theft' you might want to add it to the 'Crime' group. You must add the type to a group.
- Tick the box if all types in the service incident group can be cumulated over time, leave it unticked if all types in the group represent a snapshot in time. In most circumstances you should tick this box as you'll want to measure the group over time. For example, aggregating 'Crime' over time would allow you to see any increase/decrease between time periods.
- Describe the service incident group in the 'Group description' box.
- Give the service incident type a description, which will appear on a map when you hover your mouse over a service incident's marker.
- If you'd like a custom marker to appear on the map, you can upload an icon image. We suggest you use an icon from Icons8, which must be at least 32 x 32 pixels and in .GIF or .PNG format.
- Using the 'Area type' field, choose the system you'll use to define a service incident's location: Longitude/Latitude or post codes.
- Use the 'Data frequency' field to choose how often your data is collected. For example, if you count library rentals each month choose 'Month'.
- Use the 'Values' buttons to choose how we count your data. '1' will make each new row a unique incident, whereas 'More than 1' can be used to mark multiple incidents in one row.
- Click 'Save'.
- You can now start mapping service incidents to include in reports and open data.
